60258991, Lance Corporal, Samuel WISEMAN
Aged 31

5th Battalion, Essex Regiment
Died on Sunday 19th December 1943

Born in Q1-1912 [Newmarket 3b:872], son of Samuel and Beatrice WISEMAN (née RICHARDS), of Grafton Street, Newmarket.

A window cleaner, he married in Newmarket in Q3-1937 to Mary Agnes COE. She has not been identified in the 1939 register, but they were living at 6 Croft Cottages, Exning Road, Newmarket

In the 1939 register his widower father Samuel [21-2-1881], a house decorator, was at 40 Lowther Street, Newmarket with housekeeper, widowed Elizabeth RICHARDS [19-9-1859] (sister in law?). There is one closed record. His mother had died in 1926.

North of San Leonardo, on the Adriatic side of Italy, the line centred around a natural ravine known as "The Gully", with an average depth of 200 feet (61 m). Despite repeated attempts by the Canadians from December 10-14, the Gully remained in German hands. On the evening of 15 December 1st/5th battalion Essex Regiment from the Indian Division's 19th Indian Infantry Brigade, which had been held in reserve, was committed on the left flank of the Frontier Force Regiment to advance in the direction of Crecchio and overran a number of German positions. By the end of 16 December, after further attacks by 3rd battalion 15th Punjab Regiment from 21st Brigade which secured further positions on the lateral road, the Indian Division was firmly embedded in the heart of the main German defences. The Gully was not taken until 20th December.

Initially buried at 1CGR.WMB/2028 (map not yet found), he was re-interred in Sangro River War Cemetery on 20th June 1944
